So, how do you know which architecture your Chromebook has? You have two ways to discover it.

Hence, a 64 bits machine can handle more RAM, which means that it can manage more tasks. Remember that the number of tasks that your laptop can do at the same time depends on the amount of random access memory that it has. The reason for this is that 64 bits machines are faster because they are capable of using more RAM. Of course, 64 bits built is a lot better than 32. Like any other operating software, Chrome OS comes on both 32 and 64 bits architecture. Yes, that is the downside that I was talking about. However, if you don’t have an internet connection, you will not be able to anything. Thanks to its cloud service, you can access any document from any device, any time you like! Yes, you heard that right, because Chromebook saves everything in the cloud, you can access it from your smartphone, to make an example. This means that if you are looking for a sick new gaming laptop, you will have to look somewhere else.īut if you are looking for a laptop with great battery life, fast interface, and lightweight, the Chromebook is the answer to your prayers. Of course, this has changed a bit but Chromebooks are still meant for the same tasks. In fact, Google’s first target was to make laptops for students and people who are constantly moving around. If nothing else, this actually highlights why it makes sense for Google to decouple Chrome and Chrome OS updates, which it has begun to do with the LaCrOS effort. It is important to note that, while Chromebooks are fast, they are meant for productivity tasks such as writing, business, and entertainment (Video, movies, and music streaming) only. I say apparently, mainly because I don’t have Chrome OS 86.

Apparently, the issue was resolved with an update to both Chrome and Chrome OS as part of version 86. Without any official indication of what’s going on, I’m wondering if this pullback has to do with the Chrome zero-day exploit reported earlier this week.

Indeed, the blue shading in the above image showing Chrome OS 86 for the Lenovo Duet Chromebook means that its software version is “newer than most”, per the bottom of the release matrix site.

But it’s clear that Chrome OS 86 has been pulled for many devices. Google’s Chrome OS Releases blog doesn’t have any information explaining the situation at least not at the moment. Folks that didn’t though? They can’t update currently. If it was available for your device and you upgraded, you still have Chrome OS 86. I know that many of the Chromebooks on the update matrix site did actually show Chrome OS 86 as the most recent Stable Channel version over the past few weeks.

Here’s a sample showing the current state of some devices: Indeed, the majority of supported devices now show Chrome OS 85 as the most recent Stable Channel version available on the official Chrome OS release matrix site. It turns out, neither can most other devices anymore. I still can’t get it on the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 review unit. While many Chromebooks and Chromeboxes received the update, I didn’t at the time. About two weeks ago, Google announced the Stable Channel update for Chrome OS 86.
